Mekong River Delta (MRD) Summer-Autumn 2019 rice season is heading to its harvest time. Since the start of season (SoS) is various across the region, time-series satellite data analysis techniques could help delineat boundaries of planted rice area.

Vụ lúa Hè - Thu 2019 vùng đồng bằng sông Cửu Long đang hướng tới thời điểm thu hoạch. Do lịch gieo trồng biến động khá mạnh giữa các tỉnh trong vùng nên chuỗi dữ liệu vệ tinh đa thời gian là một nhân tố quan trọng cho phép công nghệ viễn thám có thể giúp lập bản đồ gieo trồng lúa một cách chính xác.



Summer-Autumn 2019 season in the MRD started in early April 2019 and will finish by August 2019. However, SoS variation observed from satellite data - the Sentinel-1A and Sentinel-1B, have shown 3-4 weeks, that forms early and late rice transplantation. Following table shows the estimation of rice planted area from April 2019 to 22 July 2019.

Red River delta is the second biggest rice storage in Vietnam. However, the supplied product is mostly for self-consumed of households in the region.




Winter-Spring season 2019 started in early February 2019 and will finish by late May -  early June, 2019. Observations from satellite data have shown two major dates of transplantation/seeding, which are of about 2-week gap between early and late rice transplantation. Following table shows the early estimation of rice planted area from late January 2019 to 28 February 2019.

Mekong region, Vietnam is the biggest rice storage in Vietnam. Favorable natural condition allows farmers to have 3-crop rice cultivation annually.



Winter-Spring season 2019 started in early November 2019 and finishes by late February - March 2019. Observations from satellite data have shown two major dates of transplantation/seeding, which are of 2-3 week gap between early and late rice transplantation. Following table shows the summary of rice planted area from late October 2018 to 20 February 2019.

Summer season in the Red River Delta starts right after the harvest of Spring season, during the first two weeks of June. Up to now, some rice fields have been ripe and successfully harvested. Beside the provinces with early rice such as Hanoi, Ha Nam and Hung Yen, the remaining provinces in the Red River Delta are still in the ripening stage.

Vụ mùa vùng đồng bằng sông Hồng bắt đầu ngay sau khi bà con nông dân thu hoạch lúa Xuân vào hai tuần đầu tháng 6/2018. Tính đến thời điểm hiện tại, một số nơi lúa đã chín và được gặt hái thành công. Bên cạnh những tỉnh có lúa sớm như Hà Nội, Hà Nam và một phần Hưng Yên, các tỉnh còn lại thuộc đồng bằng sông Hồng vẫn đang thời kỳ lúa làm hạt và chín.




According to a quick estimation from the Sentinel-1A satellite data acquired until September 20, 2018, the whole area has about 510,000 hectares of rice in the field. In the coming time, if not affected by natural disasters, the delta will be fully harvested, estimated total output of about 2.75 million tons of rice.

Next to rice map of Summer 2018 in Red River region, a new map of whole Mekong region has been produced from Sentinel-1A/B data for the period from April to September 2018.

Tiếp nối bản đồ lúa Mùa vùng ĐB sông Hồng, bản đồ lúa Hè Thu 2018 vùng đồng bằng sông Cửu Long được thành lập từ ảnh vệ tinh Sentinel-1A/B cho giai đoạn từ tháng 4-9/2018.

Rice monitoring from space has never been strongly supported like now with radar imagery, free resource access and powerful computerized systems. This is the first time, the whole northern Vietnam's rice map has been generated from remote sensing data.

To produce this map, the author (NIAPP/MARD) has used Sentinel-1A radar data from January 2018 to June 2018, SNAP, QGIS and Python modules running on three Intel Core-i7 workstations for 5 days. This map - the Winter-Spring 2018 rice map, has been made public via GeoServer platform (see below online App).



Theo dõi sản xuất lúa chưa bao giờ nhận được sự hỗ trợ tối đa như hiện nay với nguồn ảnh vệ tinh radar miễn phí và các hệ thống phân tích mạnh mẽ trên máy tính. Lần đầu tiên, bản đồ lúa của toàn miền Bắc Việt Nam được thành lập một cách đồng bộ từ tư liệu ảnh vệ tinh.

Remote sensing-based Information and Insurance for Crops in Emerging economies (RIICE) is a public-private partnership aiming to reduce the vulnerability of rice smallholder farmers in low-income countries in Asia. The parties make use of remote sensing technologies to map and observe rice growth in selected regions in Asia (Cambodia, India, Thailand and Vietnam). Such information helps governments to make the necessary provision to meet potential food shortages given that rice is the most important crop for most Asian countries.

RIICE Vietnam presents results of rice monitoring in Vietnam. Managed by National Institute of Agricultural Planning and Projection (NIAPP), the second phase of RIICE focuses on 8 provinces in the Red River delta (Ha Noi, Ha Nam, Hai Phong, Thai Binh, Nam Dinh, Hung Yen, Hai Duong, Bac Ninh), and two to other provinces in the Mekong River delta (An Giang and Dong Thap).

RIICE Vietnam is a consortium between NIAPP, IRRI, Sarmap and Can Tho University (CTU). In this phase, RIICE is working on:

- Rice cultivation area by season at district and commune levels;
- Yield forecast and product estimation at district and commune levels;
- Damage by disease or disaster (by flood and drought).

Utilizing cutting-edged technologies of radar satellite image processing, RIICE provides timely information on rice production to policy makers and farmers. A key option at hands for governments is to establish agricultural insurance solutions to protect rice small-holder farmers. In the same way, the risks involved in agricultural lending by banks to rice small-holder farmers can be reduced through insurance that protects the farm loans against default risks due to yield losses and thus trigger more investments in agricultural production.

Project "Monitoring rice production in the Red River Delta using remote sensing data" to implement the rice monitoring task from 2010 to 2012 using MODIS satellite images by Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

With the use of MODIS satellite images, rice production in the Red River Delta has been updated regularly. Planting area as well as rice harvesting time are analyzed from satellite images, allowing managers to continuously monitor production in the area.

The model of rice yield is based on linear regression data reported by the local departments from 2007 to present, combining the vegetation index, environmental index, water surface, heat ... allows early forecast of yield and yield of each crop, time 1 month before harvest.

The results of the rice production monitoring of the project were presented at three international workshops and four in-country workshops, which were highly appreciated by the experts for the quality and timeliness of the information.

Dự án "Sử dụng Viễn thám thu thập thông tin giám sát, cảnh báo tình hình sản xuất lúa vùng đồng bằng sông Hồng" thực hiện nhiệm vụ theo dõi lúa từ năm 2010 đến 2012 sử dụng ảnh vệ tinh MODIS do Bộ Nông nghiệp và Phát triển Nông thôn chủ trì.
